We build futures and communities through affordable housing and economic development programs.
We create more possibilities for youth by giving them the educational and professional opportunities needed to thrive.
We pave a better way forward for youth and their families by creating a foundation built on love and empathy.
We remove unconscious barriers for youth facing mental health challenges, ensuring they always have a place to turn to.
On Friday, May 18th, 400 guests will gather at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six for the 7th Annual HANDY Scholars Breakfast. The breakfast recognizes the 2012 college graduates in HANDY’s Education & Scholarship program, and three extraordinary community leaders whose longtime interest, vision and generous support have made the HANDY programs possible.
The 2012 Champions of Children Honoree’s are: Marti Huizenga, one of the original founding members of HANDY ; Cindy Arenberg-Seltzer, President & CEO of the Children Services Council; Sean Guerin, Broward College District Board of Trustees Chair.
Marsha Levy, HANDY Board member and Scholarship committee chair said, “Without the vision of our founders, the support of the Children’s Services Council, and the partnership we have with Broward College and Florida Atlantic University, HANDY would not be able to offer the complete range of services to the abused and neglected youth served that ensure they have the resources to attend college. These three individuals are true Champions of Children.”
The remarkable college graduates who will be recognized and introduced at the breakfast each surmounted incredible odds to overcome adverse childhoods and achieve the foundation of their dreams… a college education. They have become role models to their younger peers in HANDY’s programs. Currently 90 of HANDY’s youth attend 18 colleges and universities throughout the state of Florida.
The keynote speaker is Donald Lassere, Director of Scholarship America. HANDY is the newest affiliate of Scholarship America’s – Dollars for Scholars as a result of HANDY’s educational outcomes.
Sponsors of the event include Broward College, Florida Atlantic University, Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, FPL, Macy’s, Shutts & Bowen, Marcelle and Abel Rosen, AB Cover Designers, and Floral Designs by Yamir.
